Calvin Knoester and Joshua Revell, both from Kano Judo Schools in Joondalup, recently attended the Oceania Judo Union kata seminar as well as the OJU kata championships which were held in Sydney from 16-19 September 2010. Three senseis from the Japanese Kodokan led the seminar where the boys participated in the nage no kata and katame no kata practise sessions. They have been working on these katas for several months. Kata requires hours upon hours of practise with an equally dedicated partner. Not to mention patience and a permanent headache (and that was only the sensei…) End result: Gold medal! Well done boys. This was a particularly fine achievement for someone so young. They are the first ever junior boys to have won the Oceania Kata Championships.
