While our athletes were delivering incredible performances on the mat at the 2025 National Championships, a group of dedicated West Australians were making an equally important contribution from the centre of the tatami – as referees.

Celeste Knoester (Continental Referee), Patrick Tichelaar (National A), and Marlee Mickle (National B) proudly represented WA on the national stage, officiating hundreds of matches over the three-day competition. Their presence not only ensured the smooth running of the tournament but also marked another step forward in their personal refereeing journeys.

Celeste, one of WA’s most experienced referees, continues to work towards her International Licence, which would see her officiating at events on the IJF World Judo Tour. Patrick is striving to achieve his Continental Licence, while Marlee is progressing toward her National A qualification.

Refereeing in judo is a pathway in and of itself, with opportunities to officiate locally, nationally, and internationally. Judo WA is proud to encourage aspiring referees through initiatives such as our Green Shirt Beginner Referee Program, which provides the perfect entry point for those looking to get involved in this vital aspect of the sport.

Whether you’re a judoka looking to give back, or a parent or volunteer seeking a new challenge, refereeing offers a rewarding way to be part of the action.

If you’re interested in learning more about how to become a referee, reach out to Judo WA today – we’d love to help you get started.

Congratulations once again to Celeste, Patrick, and Marlee!
