The European Judo Union has published a special feature on Western Australia’s Robert ‘Bobby’ Girdwood as he prepares to compete at the historic Lausanne Adapted Judo Grand Slam in Switzerland.
The article, titled Grant Girdwood: “Every day is tough for Bobby”, shares the remarkable story behind Bobby’s journey from Kano Judo Schools in Western Australia to the international stage.
It explores the extraordinary commitment of Bobby and his father, Grant, including the extensive training, travel and support required for Bobby to pursue his ambitions at the highest level. It also reflects on the important role judo has played in Bobby’s life, providing discipline, routine, confidence and a strong sense of belonging.
Bobby has become an outstanding representative of the Western Australian judo community. In addition to his success as an adapted judoka, he regularly challenges himself in mainstream competition and this year became Australian National Champion in both adapted and mainstream judo.
His contribution extends beyond competing. Bobby is also a C Grade referee who regularly volunteers at events throughout Western Australia, giving back to the sport and the community that mean so much to him.
The Lausanne event represents another important milestone in Bobby’s journey. He has travelled approximately 13,910 kilometres from Perth to compete at the first Adapted Judo Grand Slam of its kind, joining athletes from around the world for this historic occasion.
