Judo WA is proud to share that Bobby Girdwood, an adaptive athlete from Kano Judo Schools, recently represented Australia at the International Adaptive Judo Training Camp, held from 3–6 May 2025 at Nihon Bunka University in Tokyo, Japan.
The international camp brought together adaptive judoka from across the globe for an immersive week of training, cultural exchange, and friendship. The program included daily two-hour sessions on the tatami, lectures on the life and teachings of Jigoro Kano, a traditional tea ceremony, interactive activities, and a friendly shiai competition known as the Ninagawa Cup.
Bobby was accompanied by his father, Grant Girdwood, with both proudly representing Western Australia and Kano Judo Schools as part of the Australian delegation. Their participation reflected not only Bobby’s commitment to judo but also the growing visibility and importance of inclusive pathways within the sport.
The tour was supported by Judo Australia, which provided a small subsidy to assist athletes and coaches in attending this valuable international experience. The camp offered more than just technical development — it provided a meaningful connection to judo’s cultural roots and a chance to build friendships across borders.
Judo WA congratulates Bobby on his achievement and thanks Grant for his continued support. We look forward to hearing more about their journey and celebrating the role that adaptive judo continues to play in growing an inclusive and diverse judo community.
