The 2026 Judo Ryu WA Open Championships brought 98 competitors together at the Fremantle PCYC on Sunday, 23 August 2026.
Hosted by Judo Ryu WA, the championships welcomed athletes from nine clubs across Western Australia.
Competitors ranging from the junior age groups through to senior and veteran divisions took to the mat throughout the day. The championships provided athletes with another valuable opportunity to compete, develop their skills and represent their clubs in a positive and supportive environment.
The championships also provided an important development opportunity for participants in Judo WA’s Green Shirt Beginner Referee Program.
Working alongside experienced officials, the Green Shirt referees were able to gain practical experience in a live competition environment, apply their knowledge of the rules and continue building their confidence on the mat.
The program provides an accessible pathway for members of the judo community who are interested in learning more about refereeing and contributing to the delivery of competitions throughout Western Australia.
Anyone interested in becoming a referee can learn more about the pathway and available development opportunities on the Judo WA Refereeing page.
Judo WA congratulates every athlete who participated, as well as the coaches, referees, officials, volunteers and families who supported the competition.
A special thank you goes to the Tichelaar family and the entire Judo Ryu WA team for the considerable work involved in organising and delivering the championships. Events such as these would not be possible without the commitment of the volunteers and club members who give their time to support the Western Australian judo community.
